How to Make Stuffed Fabric Gifts

Making stuffed fabric gifts can be done using various patterns available on the market, or can be done using scraps of material left over from another project. The scraps will be various shapes, so the stuffed gifts will be unique. The fabric gifts can be stuffed with various materials, but the best material for uniquely shaped gifts is potpourri. Potpourri stuffed gifts are great for decorative air fresheners or to put into drawers to keep clothes smelling fresh.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of material to the same size and shape. Put the pieces together, top sides in. Fold the edges over 1/4-inch and pin the edges into place. Iron the edges so that they stay flat while you are sewing them together.

    • 2

Sew along the edges on three sides. On the fourth side, sew in from each end, leaving a gap in the middle. The gap should be large enough so that the piece can be turned right-side out. At the end of each seam, reverse the machine for two to three stitches, then sew forward for two to three stitches so that the seam does not come undone.

    • 3

Remove the pins if you did not remove them as you were sewing. Turn the piece right-side out. Wash and dry the piece. Fill the piece with potpourri or any other chosen material.

    • 4

Sew the gap closed using an overcast stitch. While this can be done on a machine with a hem stitch, hand sewing the gap with an overcast stitch is more aesthetically pleasing.

    • 5

Attach decorative cording to a corner of the stuffed fabric gift so that it can be hung up. Place the cording on the corner and, using a needle and thread, sew five or six stitches in one spot so that the cording is attached securely to the sachet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use red and green material to make Christmas-themed stuffed gifts. Make smaller stuffed gifts in holiday shapes so they can be hung on the tree. Stuff the Christmas gifts with pine-scented or cinnamon-apple-scented potpourri.

  • Do not use oil-based potpourris or other oil-based scented items for stuffing, as the oils will stain the material.
