Making a fast and easy blanket or comforter can be even quicker if you finish the blanket by tying it instead of quilting. If tying, once you have finished the top of your blanket all you have to do is assemble your blanket layers, plan the arrangement of the ties and tie it with yarn.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric for blanket (amount depends on finished size) Fabric for backing Batting Sewing machine Sewing notions (scissors, thread, pins, etc.) Iron Yarn Yarn needle Tape measure
  1. Step 1

Piece a simple blanket top to your desired dimensions. You can make this blanket top out of as many pieces as you like. The larger your pieces, the easier and faster the blanket top will be to complete. For example, a standard twin blanket is 90 inches by 60 inches; you could piece this with 6 31-inch squares (1 inch added for seam allowances).

  2. Step 2

Make a backing piece that is the same dimensions as your finished blanket top.

  3. Step 3

Cut a batting piece that is the same dimensions as the blanket top and backing.

  4. Step 4

Lay out the backing with the wrong side facing up. Place the batting layer on the backing. Place the blanket top with right side facing up on top of the batting layer. Pin the layers together.

  5. Step 5

Plan the placement of the ties. A tie should go at each corner of the pieced blanket top to start with. Add additional ties at measured intervals in whatever pattern pleases you. Add enough ties so that the layers are secured.

  6. Step 6

Place approximately 12 inches of yarn into a yarn needle. Do not knot the end.

  7. Step 7

Insert the needle through all three layers at a point you want a tie. Bring it back up about 1/4-inch from where you inserted it and cut the yarn to a length of approximately 2 inches.

  8. Step 8

Tie the yarn ends in a tight square knot.

  9. Step 9

Repeat Steps 7 and 8 at each point you have planned for a tie.

  10. Step 10

Trim the yarn ends to an even length after the blanket is completely tied.

  11. Step 11

Bind the edges to finish the blanket.
