How to Get Cigarette Smoke Smell Out of a Mattress

When you're about to settle down for a nice long sleep after a long day, the last thing you want to smell is the stifling odor of cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke is one of the most difficult odors to get out of a mattress or other cloth surface, because it embeds itself in the fibers. If you're tired of smelling the cigarette your friend smoked a week ago while you dream in bed, it's time to get down to the main source of the problem: the mattress. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Strip the mattress of its sheets and spray a layer of cold water all over it.

    • 2

Pour baking soda over the mattress so that it is completely coated. Cover the mattress with a fitted sheet and allow it to sit overnight.

    • 3

The next day, take off the fitted sheet and allow it some more time to completely dry. Vacuum up the baking soda from the mattress using an attachment or a handheld mini vac.

    • 4

Spray an odor-absorbing deodorizer (such as Febreze) all over the mattress and again allow it a few hours to absorb the cigarette smell. Open the windows to allow fresh air to replace the cigarette odor.

    • 5

If you still smell traces of the cigarette smoke, fill a handheld carpet shampooer with a solution comprised of carpet cleaner, Febreze and a little bit of baking soda. Take your time running the cleaning brushes across the mattress. Allow it to dry for a few hours before putting sheets back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • There's no point in deodorizing your mattress if your sheets still smell like smoke. Put your sheets and comforter in the washing machine. Soak them overnight in cold water with some detergent and a small amount of vinegar, then run them through the wash cycle the next day. Put the sheets and comforter in the dryer with two or more dryer sheets. Once the sheets are dry, fold them up with more fresh dryer sheets until you're ready to put them back on the bed. If you still have a problem with the cigarette smell, you may want to purchase a foam mattress pad to place on top of the mattress. Spray the top and bottom of the mattress pad with deodorizer every week to help neutralize the smell. You can also sprinkle some baking soda between the pad and mattress and place some dryer sheets between the two to fight the odor.
