How to Troubleshoot a Proform Treadmill

Save

A Proform treadmill needs little maintenance to run smoothly. The tension on the walking belt should be regularly checked by lifting the belt at the outer edges. You should be able to lift it 3 to 4 inches from the platform. Routinely checking nuts and bolts for proper tightness should keep everything in order. If problems do occur, the following troubleshooting tips should help you identify and solve the problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Allen wrench

No Power

  • Make sure that the surge protector being used is properly grounded and turned on. Check that the treadmill power cord is properly plugged into the surge protector.

  • Check to see that the key is inserted in the console.

  • Check the circuit breaker on the frame near the power cord. If the reset/off circuit breaker has tripped, wait 5 minutes and then reset the breaker by pressing the switch in.

Power Interruptions During Use

  • Check the circuit breaker to see if it has tripped. If the reset/off circuit breaker has tripped, wait 5 minutes and reset.

  • If the power cord is properly plugged in, unplug it and wait 5 minutes before plugging it back into the surge protector.

  • Remove and reinsert the console key.

Console Display Doesn't Work

  • Some consoles require batteries. Check to see if this is the problem. If the console does not use batteries, move on to Step 2.

  • Remove the key from the console.

  • Unplug the power cord.

  • Remove the screws from the console hood and remove the hood.

  • Turn the pulley until the reed switch and magnet are aligned with a 1/8-inch gap between reed switch and pulley.

  • Replace the hood.

  • Plug in the power cord.

  • Reinsert the key into the console.

  • Run the treadmill to check for a correct speed reading. This may take a few minutes.

Slow Walking Belt

  • Check that the surge protector meets the specifications listed in the manual.

  • Remove the key from the console.

  • Unplug the power cord.

  • Turn rear roller bolts 1/4 turn counterclockwise using an Allen wrench.

  • Keeping the walking belt centered, you should be able to lift each edge of the belt 2 to 3 inches.

  • Plug the power cord back into the surge protector.

  • Reinsert the key into the console.

  • Repeat the process if, after the treadmill has run a few minutes, the walking belt is not properly tightened.

Walking Belt Slips

  • Remove the console key.

  • Unplug the power cord.

  • Follow the same steps used for a slow walking belt.

Walking Belt Is Off Center

  • Remove the key from the console.

  • Unplug the power cord.

  • If the walking belt shifts to the left, turn the left rear roller bolt 1/2 turn clockwise with an Allen wrench.

  • If the walking belt is off center to the right, turn the right rear roller bolt 1/2 turn counter clockwise with an Allen wrench.

  • Plug in the power cord.

  • Replace the console key.

  • After a few minutes of running the treadmill, check to see that the belt is centered. If not, repeat the steps.
