How to Present an Idea to Your Boss

When you have a good idea at work, it's important to present it to your boss in the best manner possible. While it may be tempting to rush to your boss with every new idea you have, it's worth the time and effort to plan your presentation beforehand. If presented thoughtfully and intelligently, your boss will be more likely to be interested in your idea. Though there is no surefire way to ensure your boss will love your idea, you can employ some methods to make sure you present it in the most beneficial manner possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather information that supports your idea. Find statistics that show why your idea is a good one. For example, if your idea is to explore a new segment of the marketplace, compile data on that segment to show the potential there.

    • 2

Write out your idea on paper. Sometimes an idea may seem good in your head, but when you put it on paper, it doesn't pan out. As you write out your idea, expand upon it. Make it more than just a few sentences.

    • 3

Prepare best-case scenarios of your idea in action. Help your boss envision the positive things that could occur as a result of your idea.

    • 4

Create an outline or presentation that illustrates your idea. If your boss hasn't requested your idea, keep this document short. It shouldn't take up too much of your boss's time to read or click through the document. Employ the use of graphics or charts to easily and efficiently demonstrate your idea.

    • 5

Approach your boss at the appropriate time. Ideally, this should be during some down time. Don't approach your boss if he is facing back-to-back meetings. Also, avoid approaching your boss with your idea as he's headed out the door to go home. If you have difficultly finding the right time, schedule a brief meeting with him.

    • 6

Be respectful. If your boss isn't interested in the idea, accept it. Try not to take it personally. While your boss may not be receptive to your idea, you may be able to present it again in a slightly different manner at some point in the future. Thank your boss for her time and leave it at that.

Tips & Warnings

  • Maintain good eye contact as you present your idea to your boss. This shows confidence and strength.

  • Don't be afraid to present ideas to your boss. While he may not like all your ideas, it shows initiative on your part. In the long run, it pays to take risks sometimes.
