Instructions

    • 1

Cut a length of hemp cord that is two times the length you want the necklace to be (plus 2 inches). This piece will be the center strings of the necklace.

    • 2

Cut another length of hemp cord that is approximately six times as long as the center string.

    • 3

Hold both lengths of cording together so that the shorter length is centered along the longer length of cording. Fold the lengths in half and tie an overhand knot near the fold to create a loop that is approximately 1 inch long.

    • 4

Arrange the cord so the two shorter lengths are in the center and the longer lengths surround them with one on each side. Tape the loop to a work surface to make the process easier.

    • 5

Take the right outer string and weave it over the string immediately to the left, under the middle string and then back over the left string.

    • 6

Tighten the knot you just created.

    • 7

Repeat steps 5 and 6, except start with the left string and weave the string exactly the opposite.

    • 8

Continue steps 5 and 6, going back and forth between starting with the right and left outer strings.

    • 9

Continue until you reach the halfway point of the necklace.

    • 10

Add a bead or charm to the two center lengths of cord.

    • 11

Continue repeating steps 5 and 6 alternating back and forth until only approximately 2 or 3 inches of center cord remains.

    • 12

Tie a large overhand knot on the ends of all four lengths of hemp that can be passed through the loop made at the beginning of the necklace. This will be how the necklace is fastened around the neck.

    • 13

Trim the excess cord to finish the necklace.
