If you are new to quilting you, may not know what a quilt label is. As you begin making full-size quilts and designing your own patterns, you will want to tell the quilt's story for those who will enjoy it today and for many years to come. The quilt label may be used to display quilt maker's name, and the name, date and location of the finished quilt or any other information the quilter would like to add. There are as many ways to create a quilt label as there are quilters. Here are some very simple methods that any new quilter can try.

From Quick Guide: Overview of Labels
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create an extra quilt block to attach your quilt label information. Many quilters simply use one of the bottom quilt block on the quilt top as a quilt label by adding the information in embroidery or with a permanent fabric marker. It's best to sketch out the information in pencil on the block first. Then use the permanent writing medium you've chosen before attaching it to the quilt top. If you make an error, you can remake the block.

  2. Step 2

Cut and hem a piece of solid-colored cotton fabric for your quilt label. Muslin is often used for this purpose. Use whatever writing medium you've chosen, and then hand-stitch the label to the front of the quilt or along the border. Or, you may attach it at the quilt bottom on the backside of the quilt.

  3. Step 3

Design your quilt label on your computer. By ironing your solid-colored fabric onto a piece of freezer paper you can send it through an ink jet printer. After you've printed out the label, heat-set the ink with you hot iron (no steam). Then, either zigzag the edges of the label on your sewing machine or hem it and hand sew it to your quilt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attach your quilt label before completing your hand or machine quilting to that your label remains securely attached to the quilt.
