How to Fix A Dell Laptop Inspiron E1705 Backlight
Three essential parts allow backlights to properly function: the backlight, inverter board and the screen itself. The backlight is the physical component that lights the screen. The backlight is built into the laptop screen as a combined component. The inverter board powers your backlight. In most cases, you will either have to replace the inverter board, but it is not unusual for both the screen/backlight component and the inverter board to both out.

1
Unplug all devices from the laptop. Turn the computer over and use the latches on the bottom of the notebook to pull out the battery and CD/DVD drive. Flip the computer back upright and open it up.
-
2
Lift out the round rubber bumpers from around the screen's perimeter. They will show hidden screws. Make sure it's just the round rubber bumpers and not the elongated ones because they do not hold screws behind them.
-
-
3
Remove the screws gently. Place these on the blank paper and tape them down with clear tape, labeling them on the paper and their corresponding location in the laptop This will help you keep track of the screws and where to screw them back into later.
-
4
Remove the front covering on the screen. Start from the DELL logo and gently pull out. Clips on the inside covering should gently release from that location. Work your way slowly around until the entire front cover is removed.
-
5
Remove the cables in the inverter board. Remove the inverter board's screw(s). Make sure to place the screw(s) on the paper. Tape them down and label them.
-
6
Screw in the working inverter board and plug the cables back into it. The cables will go in only one way.
-
7
Place the front covering back onto the screen. Gently apply pressure to the perimeter to allow the clips in the laptop cover to lock back into place.
-
8
Screw in the front cover and replace the rubber bumpers.
-
9
Lock the battery and the CD/DVD drive into place. Plug in all cables and power up the laptop.

Tips & Warnings
If the instructions do not fix the backlighting issue, the screen has gone bad and you will have to remove more screws and slowly work to replace the screen.
Always tape and label all screw locations. Missing or misplaced screws can cause shorts, or electrical discharges in laptops, rendering the components useless.
A small Phillips screwdriver will give you a better grip on the laptop's tiny screws and help you prevent damaging the screw.
If you have to replace the screen, use caution because some screens contain mercury. In most cases if you have to replace a screen, look for a professional or move slowly and label screw locations and parts thoroughly so you know how to put everything back together.
Do not forcefully pull off the front cover. This part should easily come up once all the screws are removed. Always look for extra screws holding the cover on if you're having problems getting it off.
Do not press hard on the screen because too much pressure can cause stress damage and discolor or even crack the screen. The most expensive part on a laptop is the screen, which costs hundreds or even thousands of dollars to replace.
