Adding a link bar to your website can help visitors easily navigate through your site and to external sites. Microsoft's FrontPage, one of the most popular page-building software programs, lets you create a link bar with ease, add whatever links you please, and then apply the link bar throughout your site.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Launch MS FrontPage. Go to the top navigation, click "Open," and select the site you want to edit. You will most likely want to start on your index page. You will be able to add the link bar to any page within your site.

  2. Step 2

Click "Insert" and then "Web Component." This will open a new dialog box.

  3. Step 3

Choose "Insert Web Component," then click "Component Type." Choose the "Link Bars" option. Then click "Bar With Custom Links." Click "Next" on the dialog box. Browse through the selection of link-bar templates and choose a template. Click "Next."

  4. Step 4

Choose a position for the bar--either horizontal or vertical. Though you can put the link bars anywhere you want, you might want to visit a few sites with similar designs to your own to get an idea of the best ways to use your new navigation tools. If your site isn't too complex, using a simple vertical side navigation bar is probably best. Click "Finish" to close out of the dialog box. Now you're finished determining the placement of the link bar your page, and it's time to add the individual links.

  5. Step 5

On the top nav of the FrontPage program, open the "Link Bar Properties." This will launch a new dialog box. You'll be prompted to create a name the link bar. Once you've created the name, you can add your choice of either internal links that stay on your site, or external links that lead to other websites.

  6. Step 6

Open "Link Bar Properties." Now you organize the links you've just added by creating link levels. You can choose to put some links on all the pages on your site. You can choose to make "parent" and "child" level links for grouping links into categories and subcategories. And you can add links that let visitors move to the next page, back a page or back to the home page.

  7. Step 7

Click the "OK" button to save your changes, and you're all set.
