Coverage for Medicare hospital insurance, also known as part A, and medical insurance, also known as part B, starts on the first of the month of your birthday. You have an option of not accepting part B medical insurance, since you have to pay for it out of your own pocket. Expect to get a Medicare card in the mail a few months prior to your turning 65.
