How to Configure an ADSL Router

Configuring an ASDL router may seem like a daunting task, but it can actually be pretty simple. Manufacturers are making routers more and more user friendly so that users can customize and simplify their setups. Though all routers have their own specific configuration instructions, this article will give you a general guide to the steps you will follow to configure your router.

Instructions

    • 1

Before you begin, consult the manual that came with your router, or the manufacturer's website to get details on setting up your particular model.

    • 2

Forward your ports. This involves opening ports your router has closed as a default measure. For instance, if you want to use file sharing, you may need to "forward" this port manually.

    • 3

Use a web search to find the port numbers associated with the programs you want to use. Enter the words "port forward" along the name of the program you want to open into a Google or Yahoo! search. The results will show you the port numbers that represent each program.

    • 4

Log into your router's configuration setup. Click on "Port Forwarding." A configuration page will open in a new window.

    • 5

Add a new program or service to your router configuration. You will likely see "Add Custom Service" or something to that effect in your configuration menu, depending on your particular router.

    • 6

Enter the name of the program/service and then the port number when prompted.

    • 7

Enter your server's IP address when prompted. It should be the same IP address as your Internet IP address. If you can't find your address, check out an IP lookup site (see Resources section).

    • 8

Finish adding the service/program by clicking Add and Apply or something to that effect--again depending on your particular model of ADSL router. Now the ports for all your programs are open, and your ADSL router has been configured.
