    The Writing Process

  1. Step 1

Read the writing prompt carefully. Note keywords that tell you what you are to write about in the essay.

  2. Step 2

Brainstorm ideas that relate to the prompt. Think about experiences you have had, knowledge that you possess, and observations you have made that relate to what you must write. Write them down.

  3. Step 3

Study your brainstorming notes. Categorize ideas that go together; notice where support material is within your brainstorm notes. Briefly organize the direction of your essay and the support. Allow one fourth of your total writing time for your brainstorming session.

  4. Step 4

Write your essay. Start with a good introduction that hooks your reader's interest. Lead into the subject matter by giving the direction you will take without jumping into the middle part of your essay.

  5. Step 5

Write the body of your essay. If you have three main ideas, for example, you must have three well-developed paragraphs that lend support to each of those main ideas. Anecdotes, examples and personal knowledge and observations can be the details that develop the paragraphs. Finish by concluding briefly. Don't rehash--just wind down your writing by leading to a natural end.
