How to Make Sugar Glider Accessories

Sugar gliders are great pets. They are adorable, ever so soft and a lot of fun to watch jump, glide and fly all over the place. Sugar gliders are like kids and enjoy a variety of toys and accessories. While you can buy many items in stores, you can save some money and customize the toys and accessories so they better suit your individual glider's needs and wants. A hammock and pouch are perfect accessories which are easy to make and will put a sweet little smile on your glider's face.

Instructions

  1. Fleece Pouch

    • 1

Take a piece of fleece fabric and lay it out on a flat surface. Measure and cut out two 4-inch-by-4-inch squares. Place the fleece squares on top of one another, wrong side out. Make sure all the edges line up perfectly.

    • 2

Thread your sewing machine with a cotton thread that matches the fleece fabric. Sew three sides of the square. Tie off the ends into multiple knots to prevent them from coming undone. Cut a piece of nylon cord about 7 inches long.

    • 3

Take one edge of the cording and sew it to the top left edge beside the open, unsewn section. Sew the other end to the opposite side. Tie off the ends into multiple knots.

    • 4

Flip the pouch inside out so the correct side of the fleece now shows. Untwist the nylon cording. Your fleece pouch is now complete and your sugar glider can hide inside it. Hang the cord from your wrist or hold it like a bag to carry your glider with you anywhere.

    Hammock

    • 5

Unroll your cotton cording. Measure out a 12-inch piece and cut it off. Cut nine more 12-inch pieces. Lay the 10 pieces on a flat surface. Line them up, leaving half an inch between each cord. Make sure the ends all match and are even.

    • 6

Cut 10 16-inch cotton cord strips. Place one of these strips across the top of the cord pieces you've already laid out. Make sure it crosses in the opposite direction of the other cords. Tie the overlapping cord in knot around the first laid-out cord. Skip the second cord, then tie a knot around the third cord. Repeat every other cord.

    • 7

Lay the second 16-inch cord across the 10 laid-out cords about half an inch down from the first cord you already tied. Start tying knots on the opposite side, skipping every other cord. Repeat with the rest of the 16-inch cords, alternating the sides you start tying on and continuing to skip every other cord.

    • 8

Cut four nylon cords of equal length. Tie one in a double knot on the corner knot of the hammock. Repeat with all corners. Take a lighter and carefully singe the ends of each cord. Make sure you don't actually light it on fire, just melt the cord threads enough to prevent fraying.

    • 9

Tie each nylon cord corner onto a different section of the sugar glider's cage. They now have a fun hammock to sleep in and play on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose material that is as natural as possible, as sugar gliders might chew on the accessories.

  • Be careful making the hammock holes, either go big or very small as a glider can get its head stuck in the holes
