How to Remove Wallpapers From a Computer

Depending on where you purchased your computer, it may have come with extra wallpaper samples in addition to the preloaded ones from Windows. If add your own pictures or download different wallpapers online, you might find that they begin to take up some space. It is, however, possible to remove personal and Windows wallpapers from a computer.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Administrative access to your computer

    How to Remove Personal Wallpapers From a Computer

  1. Step 1

    Click once on the "Show desktop" button to the right of the Windows "Start" button. This will minimize all open windows, so that you can view your Desktop.

  2. Step 2

    Right click once in an empty space (icon free) on your Desktop. This will bring up a menu.

  3. Step 3
     

    Click once on the "Personalize" option.

  4. Step 4
     

    Click once on the "Desktop Background" link on the "Personalization" window.

  5. Step 5
     

    Click once on the icon for the wallpaper you want to remove.

  6. Step 6

    Press the "Delete" key once.

  7. Step 7

    Click once on the "Yes" key, if you are positive you want to delete the wallpaper. This step will send the wallpaper to the recycle bin. If you find you deleted a wallpaper in error, you can restore it.

  8. Step 8
     

    Click once on the "OK" button. The icon for the wallpaper might still be present. However if you repeat steps 1 through 4, you'll see that it is no longer there.

  10. Step 1

    Click once on the "Show desktop" button to the right of the Windows "Start" button. This will minimize all open windows, so that you can view your Desktop.

  11. Step 2

    Right click once in an empty space (icon free) on your Desktop. This will bring up a menu.

  12. Step 3
     

    Click once on the "Personalize" option.

  13. Step 4
     

    Click once on the "Desktop Background" link on the "Personalization" window.

  14. Step 5
     

    Select "Windows Wallpapers" from the "Picture Location" drop down menu on the "Desktop Background" window.

  15. Step 6
     

    Click once on the icon for the wallpaper you want to remove.

  16. Step 7

    Press the "Delete" key once.

  17. Step 8
     

    Click once on the "Continue" button on the "Destination Folder Access Denied" pop up window.

  18. Step 9

    Click once on the "Continue" button on the next pop up window advising you that Windows needs your permission to continue. If you do not have administrative rights on your machine, you might need someone with such rights to enter a password. Once again, this step will send the wallpaper to the recycle bin. It can be restored.

Tips & Warnings
  • To restore any inadvertently deleted wallpapers, just go to the Recycle Bin, click once on the file and then click once on the "Restore this item" button.
