Iron-ons can be a fun, inexpensive way to personalize an item of clothing or bag. However, sometimes it becomes necessary to remove an iron-on. Although possibility and ease of iron-on removal can vary depending on the type of iron-on, the type of fabric as well as how long the decal has been on the material, there is a method you can try that has worked for many.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cardboard Iron Ironing board
  1. Step 1

Place the cardboard so that it covers the entire iron-on. Tape in place along the sides to keep it secure.

  2. Step 2

Flip the item inside out so that the material on the underside of the decal is facing up.

  3. Step 3

Turn your iron-on to the highest dry setting available and allow to fully heat up.

  4. Step 4

Press down on the underside of the decal for 4-5 seconds at a time (use your judgment based on how delicate the material is). Repeat.

  5. Step 5

Periodically check the decal to see if the edges are pulling away from the material. If so, loosen the adhesive as much as you can, but do not pull hard enough to stretch the material. Continue treating the underside of the decal with the iron until it pulls away completely from the material. Be patient as it may take some time.

  6. Step 6

Wash the material in hot water to remove any remaining adhesive residue. Do not place in the dryer until you are certain the material is free of glue.
