How to Install Wireless DSL
DSL lines carry data from the Internet across phone lines to the subscriber. So you will most likely have to go through a phone company or a similar type of service in order to configure your computers for a wireless DSL connection. The process can be time consuming and confusing to set up, but with the right equipment and software you can install your wireless DSL yourself instead of having to pay a technician.

1
Call your phone or television company to sign up for DSL service. They will send you a DSL modem, cords, instructions, and activate your service through your telephone line.
-
2
Purchase a wireless router and a wireless adapter from a electronics store. Install the software for your router and wireless adapter onto all of the computers in your home first. This is very important.

3
Hook up the DSL modem. You will need to run an active telephone cord from the wall to your DSL modem. Then an ethernet cord from your DSL modem to the router. Finally, another ethernet cord will need to be connected from the router to your computer (at least temporarily so that you can configure your router).

4
Configure your router. Set a password on your router so that only you, your family, and friends will be able to access the wireless connection. Name your wireless connection something that you will recognize easily. The directions for how to configure your specific wireless router varies by the model. For many routers, you have to type "192.168.1.1" into your web browser in order to access router configurations. See more on how to configure wireless routers in "Resources" below.

5
Insert your wireless adapter (see an example in "Resources" below) into the laptop or computer that will be connecting wirelessly to your DSL Internet service. Boot up the computer. Assuming the proper software has been installed, you should see a small icon (usually a small computer) attempting to connect to the computer somewhere on your screen, usually near your computer clock. If you don't, go to your computer's Control Panel and click on "Network Connections." Click the icon for "Wireless Network Connection" then "View Wireless Networks." You should see a list of all of the wireless connections in your area. Click the name of the connection that you named and press "Connect" to get on the Internet.

Tips & Warnings
If your DSL wireless connection still isn't working even though you've followed all of the basic instructions for your router, it may be a configuration problem. Some wireless connections won't work if you don't allow all or certain wireless signals (G, N, A, and B). Some laptops and computers are only setup to work with one or more of these types of signals. .
