There are many different kinds of knots that all have different purposes. Having a general knowledge about basic knots is useful, as you never know when or why you may need to be able to tie a secure knot. Here are some guidelines for tying three common knots.

  1. Tie a Square Knot

    • 1

      Tie a square knot as a general, all-purpose knot. Cross the right end of the rope over and under the left end of the rope.

      Cross the left end of the rope over and under the right end of the rope.

      Pull each extending end to tighten the square knot.

    Tie a Clove Hitch Knot

      Tie a clove hitch knot to attach a rope to an object. Loop the rope around the bar.

      Loop the end of the rope extending upward back down around the back of the bar. Extend the end of the rope through the loop made.

      Bring the same end back up again and loop it through the original loop on the bar. Pull the knot tight.

    Tie a Sheet Bend Knot

      Tie a sheet bend knot to attach two ropes securely. Make a small loop with one of the ropes. Place the end of the other rope through the loop of the first rope.

      Pass the end of the second rope along the back side of the first loop. Make a small loop between the two ropes and pull the second rope though this loop.

      Pull all ends to tighten the knot securely.
