How to Use a Spark Plug Gap Gauge

For your vehicle to operate at peak performance, the gap needs to be set properly on your spark plugs. Too little or too big a gap can cause your engine to burn too much gas, resulting in higher emissions and ultimately burning more oil in your car. Knowing how to set the spark plug gap is a very simple process. The gap tool is already set up and is very quick and easy to use.

Instructions

1. Check your vehicle owner's manual for the exact gap size to set your spark plug gap. The gap on a spark plug is the distance between the center electrode of the plug and the ground electrode that goes over the top of the center electrode.

2. Locate the gap size on your spark plug gap tool. Sizes are normally set in millimeters.

3. Slide the proper gap blade of the spark plug gap tool between the center electrode and ground electrode of the spark plug. If the gap is too wide, use your finger to squeeze the ground electrode down until it touches the blade resting on top of center electrode. Your spark plug is now ready to be inserted in the engine.
