If you have many movies stored on your computer and an LCD HD TV set, it is possible to stream the movies to the TV through an Ethernet connection. To do this, you need Windows Media Center installed on your computer. This comes standard with the Vista operating system. You also need a router or network system linking your computer and Internet access to other outlets. Finally, you need a way for the TV to read the Media Center program. This is done through a Media Center Extender.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Vista Media Center Extender Network system router Ethernet cables
  1. Step 1

Check to see if your TV set has a Media Center Extender built in. The TV's instruction manual should explain this. If it does, connect the TV to your router or wireless system using the Ethernet port in back of the TV.

  2. Step 2

Purchase an external Media Center Extender for your TV. This device looks much like a VCR or DVR and should have multiple options to connect it to the TV, including HDMI, component or composite cables. Connect the two devices with the best available connection.

  3. Step 3

Link the extender to your router or other network system. Most extenders will recognize a wireless network system. Otherwise, connect the extender to the router though the Ethernet connection.

  4. Step 4

Consult your TV set's manual for how to access the channel for the media extender. If the extender is internal, it should be included as an option on the input menu or through the remote control. If you use an external device, choose the input source (cable port) you connected the extender to.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are two different types of Media Extenders. The earliest extenders (Hewlett-Packard x5400 and the Linksys WMCE54AG) will not work with Windows Vista.
