Repair Outlook Express

Outlook Express came installed on all Microsoft-enabled computers beginning with Internet Explorer version 4.0 through version 6.0 (prior to Windows Vista). Outlook Express is a Web-based email application, similar to Microsoft Outlook, albeit a scaled down version. Outlook Express includes toolbars and other features Microsoft users are familiar and comfortable with. If Outlook Express is not working properly, or will not start at all, one of several steps may repair the email application.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Close Outlook Express and turn off the computer if Outlook Express is running slowly, not responding or will not open. Rebooting the system and the program will often fix this issue. Once the computer is completely shut down, turn it back on and open Outlook Express.

  2. Step 2

Clean up Internet Explorer's temporary files. If these files are damaged, Outlook Express can have problems displaying messages. Open a new Internet Explorer window and click on "Tools." Click "Delete Browsing History" and choose "Delete Files." When an alert window opens, click "Yes" to confirm that these files should be deleted.

  3. Step 3

Delete emails that appear suspicious. Look for emails from unknown senders or with unexpected attachments. If possible, delete them prior to opening them and empty the deleted items folder. Damage or infected files can cause serious problems in Outlook Express.

  4. Step 4

Scan for viruses. Email messages are one of the most common vehicles for viruses, so update the antivirus program often and scan frequently. If the program has a setting to scan incoming emails for viruses, be sure to enable this.

  5. Step 5

Run the "System File Checker." This program will check for damaged files in Outlook Express and Internet Explorer, as well as other Microsoft programs. To run this application, click the "Start" button and then click "Run." Type "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) in the "Open" box. Click "OK." Follow the prompts and restart the computer when System File Checker is complete.
