Do an At-Home Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion, also known as microdermabrasion, is a skin treatment typically performed in a dermatologist's office. According to the Mayo Clinic, microdermabrasion involves small crystals that are massaged onto the skin to remove the top layer of cells. The results can include clearer skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Professional microdermabrasion can be expensive, so skin care manufacturers have introduced at-home dermabrasion kits that typically run $25 to $30 each. Using one of these at-home dermabrasion kits is easy and can help clear up your skin problems without expensive treatments. This article will tell you how to do an at-home dermabrasion. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an at-home microdermabrasion kit from your local drugstore. A number of kits are on the market, manufactured by companies like L'Oreal, Dove and Neutrogena. Most kits contain the same ingredients. Choose one that appeals to you and meets your budget.

    • 2

Most kits include two bottles--the microdermabrasion crystals and a post-treatment moisturizer. Some kits also include a battery-operated dermabrasion wand that massages the crystals into your skin. If your kit includes a wand, it will need batteries.

    • 3

Wash your face with a gentle facial cleanser and remove any makeup. Gently pat your skin with a towel, but leave your skin damp.

    • 4

Dispense a small amount of the microdermabrasion crystals (about the size of a quarter) onto your fingertips. Gently rub the product into your face with small, circular strokes. Be sure to apply the product to your entire face up to your hairline. Continue gently massaging your face for 1 to 2 minutes, or as instructed by your product packaging. If your kit includes a microdermabrasion wand, attach the included pad to the wand and turn it on. Gently place the pad against your face and rub in circular motions for 1 to 2 minutes. You will not need to massage the crystals with your fingers if you are using a microdermabrasion wand.

    • 5

Rinse your face with cool water. Gently pat dry with a towel.

    • 6

Dispense a quarter-sized amount of the post-treatment moisturizer onto your fingers and apply to your entire face. Massage the cream into your skin until it is absorbed.

    • 7

Use your at-home dermabrasion kit up to three times per week. Avoid using it on consecutive days. If your skin is very sensitive, only use the kit once a week.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use a sunscreen if you will be outdoors. Microdermabrasion can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn, so always apply at least SPF 15 sunscreen when you leave the house.

  • At-home dermabrasion kits may cause your skin to tingle or look pink after treatment. If your skin becomes excessively red or irritated, stop using the kit and speak to your dermatologist. Do not use a dermabrasion kit more than three times per week.
