How to Become an ObGyn Doctor

Obstetricians and gynecologists (ob-gyns) handle a variety of women's health issues, including pelvic disorders, hormonal imbalances and general health concerns. In addition, they handle prenatal care and childbirth. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these professionals can expect to earn from $203,270 to $247,348 annually, depending on geographical area and experience. But before launching a career as an ob-gyn, you must complete a bachelor's degree, medical school, internship and residency. Here's a guide to becoming an ob-gyn doctor.

Instructions

1. Earn a bachelor's degree. Make sure to take coursework in anatomy, chemistry and biology to make your application to medical schools more attractive. Some colleges offer a premed program, focusing on coursework that medical schools require.

2. Schedule a testing date for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Accredited medical schools require applicants to take the MCAT and submit their scores with their application materials. You can register for the test at the MCAT website (see Resources).

3. Apply to medical schools. When applying to medical schools, choose programs that allow students to concentrate their studies in the ob-gyn specialty. For a directory of medical schools, check out the American Association of Medical Colleges directory (see Resources).

4. Complete an ob-gyn internship and residency. Once you complete medical school, your program director will assist in finding an internship and residency at a local hospital. This will take several years to complete.

5. Apply for licensure with your state. All states require ob-gyn doctors to be licensed. Contact your state's medical board for requirements; most states require an application and exam.
