The most serious form of skin cancer is melanoma. Pigment that gives skin its color is melanin. Melanoma develops in cells that produce melanin. Excessive exposure to the sun or ultraviolet radiation can increase the risk of melanoma. If detected early enough, melanoma can be successfully treated. Knowing the warning signs of melanoma can help save your life.

2. Look for moles that are irregularly shaped, and have two sides that look different from each other.

3. Look for moles where their edges or borders are scalloped or irregular.

4. Look for the mole that has several different colors or has uneven shades.

5. Take note of any mole that itches or bleeds.

6. Look for moles that spread out, discoloring the skin next to it.

7. Look for moles that change texture.

8. Make an appointment with a dermatologist if you have a skin growth that displays one or more of the listed signs. While it may be nothing serious, pay attention and have a dermatologist periodically check your skin.
