How to Adopt a Child From the UK

Adopting a child brings with it the opportunity to care for someone who needs the love and nurturing many couples are ready to give. It is an amazing process that nurtures an environment where love and understanding can flourish. If you have family roots in the UK and want to honor your heritage, or are living there currently, here's what needs to be done in order to adopt in that country.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a region. Due to each region having its own separate adoption criteria, choose where in the UK you would like to adopt a child. Do you want to focus on Cheshire, Essex, Greater London or one of the other regions? Once you choose a region, find out the requirements and begin fulfilling them. Visit Adopt A Child UK for more information on the various criteria pertaining to each region (see Resources below).

    • 2

Choose representation. You have to choose an approved adoption agency to arrange your adoption, or you can choose to use the adoption services provided by the authorities of the region you chose. Visit The Adoption Guide's website to find a list of agencies located all around the world (see Resources below).

    • 3

Send a letter to the chosen agency telling them of your qualifications as an adoptive parent. The letter should include your ethnic origin, age, length of marriage, occupation and details of any other children you may have. You should also include the specifics of the child you would like to adopt (newborn, teenager, etc.).

    • 4

Wait. Once you have been accepted by an adoption agency, you will have to wait until a child that matches your criteria is found.

    • 5

Meet with a social worker. When the adoption agency finds a child that they feel is suitable, you will have to meet with a social worker to learn more about the child. The social worker will use this meeting to decide if you and the child are a good match.

    • 6

Apply to the court. When you have found a child that is compatible with you and your situation, apply to the court for an adoption order. This process usually takes at least 10 weeks. When the adoption order is approved, the child will be your legal responsibility.
