How to Make Your Own Speaker Covers

Putting new covers on your speakers allows you to repair the speaker without replacing it. You can do this yourself with store-bought fabric. These steps will give you a beautified speaker in no time at all.

Things You'll Need

  • Butter knife Flathead screwdriver Phillips head screwdriver Speaker fabric
  • Pry off the front of the speaker with your butter knife. Some fronts simply pop off, others are screwed on. Inspect your speaker to see how to remove the front properly. If it is a wooden speaker, then it is most likely nailed on and can be pried off.

  • Take off the old speaker fabric.

  • Cut the new fabric to size, using the old speaker fabric as a pattern.

  • Put the new fabric over one corner and then stretch the fabric over each corner of the speaker front. Pay attention to the direction of the fabric's warp.

  • Replace the front of the speaker, corner to corner, while you are holding the fabric in position. You may need to put down the front almost all the way on the speaker, and tuck the fabric in the space with a butter knife.

  • Inspect the fabric to be sure it is affixed to the speaker and not loose or wrinkled.
