How to Make Therapeutic Bath Salts

There's nothing like a warm, soothing bath when you're sick or injured, and the addition of therapeutic bath salts enhances the healing process. The wonderful thing about bath salts is they are inexpensive and easy to make and most of the ingredients can be found in the local grocery aisle. Specialty stores like Whole Foods sell the essential oils, or you can go through online wholesalers like Wellington Fragrance Co. or Essential Wholesale. Instructions

  1. Lemon Rosemary Bath Salts

    • 1

In a large ceramic bowl, mix together the salts and baking soda. You can use a spoon but hands are best, just make sure they're clean and dry.

    • 2

Crush the rosemary with a mortar and pestle, or place the rosemary in a plastic bag and run a rolling pin or bottle over it. Mix the rosemary into the salt. At this point, you can continue using your hands or use a spoon. It all depends on whether or not you want the rosemary on your hands.

    • 3

Add five drops of the lemon oil, mix thoroughly to disperse the oil throughout the mixture, then add the remaining five drops and mix again.

    • 4

Cover the bowl and let sit overnight.

    • 5

The next day, stir the mixture and check the aroma. At this point you can adjust and add more lemon or rosemary if you desire. If you add more fragrance, be sure to let the mixture sit for at least four hours to mature. If the scent is too strong, add another ¼ cup of baking soda and let sit.

    • 6

After the mixture has matured, transfer the salts to an air-tight container. To use, add ¼-to-½ cup to a hot bath.
