How to Receive High-Definition Broadcasts on a TV
HDTV, or high-definition television, is a digital broadcast that provides a better-quality, higher-resolution picture on certain sets than does SDTV (standard-definition television). It is possible to obtain HD broadcasts in most locations in the United States--but first, you need to possess a few necessary components and make a series of important arrangements.

1
Purchase the required television for high-definition broadcasts. Buy a TV that is listed as HDTV or HDTV-compatible.

Obtain additional high-definition equipment. Get an account set up and any other required components. DirecTV and Dish Network will have to install a special high-definition satellite dish and a HD receiver in your home. Some cable companies will also require you to purchase (or lease) a special high-definition box.
-
4
Hook up any equipment with high-definition cables. Use HD cables when connecting any receivers or boxes to your HDTV.
-
5
Watch high-definition broadcasts. Tune to the specific channels that are listed in your guide as broadcasting in HD. In most cases, you will have some channels that broadcast high definition and others that are SDTV.

Tips & Warnings
Most high-definition televisions have an HD tuner integrated in the TV. Others will require a separate HD tuner box to pick up the high-definition broadcast. Check the manual or consult the manufacturer to confirm the type you are buying. It is possible to hook up an HDTV to an antenna, and it will likely pickup high-definition broadcasts free from major networks. This is not always available in all areas.
You will not be able to view high-definition broadcasts if you do not use HD wiring on all components. Not all shows on high-definition channels are broadcast in HD. Some of the shows will be shown in standard definition. Typically, the ones broadcast in high definition will carry a notification on the screen.
