If you want to find out the owner of a cell phone after receiving a mysterious call, or want to trace calls of a phone you own, you can use an online cell-phone tracking service. These services tap into the national registry of cell phone numbers to determine who owns the cell phone account; more sophisticated (paid) cell-phone tracking services may also pinpoint the location of the phone via GPS, or track the number and types of calls placed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the owner of the phone with a free reverse cell phone lookup. Visit freecellphonelookups.com to enter the 10-digit cell phone number you wish to trace, then select "Search Now!" to conduct the search. The results will reveal the location of the cell phone.

  2. Step 2

Conduct a reverse phone lookup online. Visit reversemobile.com and enter the 10-digit cell phone number; click "Search Now!" to conduct a search. Results will reveal the cell phone owner's location; you will have options to purchase a comprehensive phone report if you wish to do so.

  3. Step 3

Use Google to trace a basic phone number. Enter the cell phone number with quotes around it directly into the Google search bar and click "Search." This will give you access to the Google Phonebook that stores public records.

  4. Step 4

Conduct a reverse phone number search on whitepages.com. Select the "Reverse Lookup" tab at the top of the screen to do a reverse phone search. You will need to enter the phone number in the designated field, then select "Search" to access the database.

  5. Step 5

Use the Search Detective to conduct a reverse lookup with a cell phone number. Visit searchdetective.net to conduct a reverse lookup search or phone number lookup by first name, last name and state.

Tips & Warnings
  • Owner information is not public record; many sites allow you to purchase the owner information and phone report after conducting the basic phone number lookup.
  • Former President George W. Bush signed The Telephone Records and Privacy Protection Act of 2006 on January 12, 2007, making it illegal to sell, transfer or own confidential phone records; this means you cannot legally obtain this information by conducting a search or paying for a service to do it for you.
