Just outside of the hustle and bustle of the popular vacation destination of Hershey, Pennsylvania, lies Pennsylvania Dutch Country. This area in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, offers a look at life at a slower pace, allowing visitors to kick back and relax while taking in the Amish countryside lifestyle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Experience an Amish buggy ride. With various locations throughout the area, visitors can enjoy buggy rides of varying lengths as a way to get a personal and up-close view of Amish living. Your Amish buggy driver will often provide facts and answer questions help you understand these peaceful people and their way of life. Be sure to check your hotel's information desk for pamphlets and phone numbers of the various buggy companies in the area to see which best suits your needs and location.

  2. Step 2

Visit the Amish Village or an Amish farm and house to tour what one of these communities is like. You can see farms in working order, check out one room school houses and see what home life is like (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

View "The Amish Experience." This theater show tells the intimate story of Amish life through the eyes of one family as their child debates whether to leave the Amish lifestyle. This unique presentation uses special effects, multiple screens and a 3D set to present the story in an intimate setting so visitors of all ages can understand the choices and decisions the Amish must face. This presentation can be combined with tickets for a guided tour of Amish properties, as well as various other options. See Resources for further information.

  4. Step 4

Known for their exquisite quilts, there are various places throughout the area where visitors can view and purchase such works of art. One such museum is the People's Place Quilt Museum, which features varying displays of specialty and novelty quilts and a country store where such creations can be purchased. Admission is free. See Resources for further information and museum hours of operation.

  5. Step 5

Consider one of the many restaurants and smorgasboards, which can offer traditional sit-down dining as well as the popular family-style dining this area is known for. Locations such as Bird-in-Hand and Good 'n Plenty are favorites among tourists, offering traditional country favorites like baked ham, roast beef, fried chicken and homemade pies. Be sure to do your research online or with your hotel concierge upon arrival for such dining locations.
