Cooking cheap does not have to mean cooking unhealthy or unappealing food. Cooking cheap means getting the most value for your food budget. This is a basic tenet of frugal living. The key to cooking cheap is to actually cook your meals rather than eating out or bringing prepared meals home, whether fresh or frozen. Once you have committed to preparing your own meals, the steps below will help you to save money on groceries.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first of the save money tips for cooking cheap is to always shop from a list. Plan your meals for at least a week and make your list from that. When planning your meals, know what items are on sale at your local supermarket.

  2. Step 2

An excellent way to save money on groceries is to cook your meals in bulk and freeze them. Prepare at least a week’s worth of meals at once, a month’s worth is better. Cooking in bulk is cooking cheap because it allows you to buy in bulk. This is where buying super sized goods at a wholesale club can help you save money on groceries.

  3. Step 3

Always keep in mind when shopping sales or at wholesale clubs that you are not saving money on groceries if you have to throw part of it away. Only buying what you can use and what you need is one of the most important save money tips. Frugal living means not being wasteful.

  4. Step 4

To save money on groceries, limit your number of trips to the store. This will help you to save money on groceries by eliminating impulse purchases. Unless you are disciplined and shop only from your list, this is the best way to eliminate the temptation of impulse purchases. This is a primary secret of cooking cheap. A side benefit of reducing the number of trips to the store is saving on gas, one of the save money tips recommended for frugal living in general.

  5. Step 5

Once you begin reaping the benefits of cooking cheap you will be amazed at the side benefits. You will not only save money on groceries, you will be more organized, have more time from preparing meals in advance, and spend time at the dinner table at home with your family. Cooking cheap and frugal living have numerous benefits besides saving money.
