Step 1
First thing is to decide on what kind of wedding invitation you would like. Look at the colors and theme of your wedding. If you don't know the colors yet but still want to set the tone that it will be an opulent wedding think of the texture as the main component of your invitations.
-
Step 2
Choose paper. Most people that decide to do their wedding invitations go to their local stationary store and pick up some paper. Think outside the box. Go to your local art store and look at the different textures and colors of watercolor paper. Out of one large 20x30 paper for about $3.00 you will be able to make 5 to 10 cards. And you will be able to print beautifully on watercolor paper using your ink jet printer.
-
Step 3
Either cut the paper using your paper cutter and ruler or measure out your paper into 5 inch increments place the ruler along the markings and tear the paper. This is an easy and beautiful way to have hand torn edges that look very expensive.
-
Step 4
If you decide to go with a more contemporary wedding invitations check out colored papers, papers with texture even fabric. If they are not printable you can always use them as a backing over which you can place your invitation printed on vellum. You can even print your invitations on ink jet printable cards and glue them to handmade paper with pieces of grass or wood in it. Making your invitations very natural looking.
-
Step 5
Lay out your invitations wording in any program. Illustrator would be great but you can do it in Word as well, just make sure you adjust your paper margins to the pre cut pieces of paper you have. If you are not making a large quantity and have great penmanship think of writing out each invitation. This is very expensive when you get a calligrapher to do it, but you or one of your friends my secretly be a calligrapher without even knowing it.
-
Step 6
Now think of embellishments you can add. Ribbon is very easy yet always beautiful. The color of the ribbon can set the tone for the wedding. Mix a couple of ribbons together and tie them at the top of the card. Pull them threw two holes you punch (evenly spaced) at the top or even bottom of the paper.
-
Step 7
If you are more creative go ahead and visit your local art store or stationary store and pick up a wax stamp. They come in all letters and with different designs. Melt some wax and make custom wax seals which you can then glue with a piece of ribbon or even alone on the invitation. You can even use them to close the envelope. You can find 'wax' that can be used with a glue gun. This is much safer and easer to use then melting your own wax. It also does not drip all over the place.
-
Step 8
Most importantly don't forget to play with different textures and papers. Use things that are not common. Make your invitations stand out and definitely have them speak of who you are. Wood, metal, fabric can all work when making an invitation so have some fun.
-
Step 9
Choose your wedding invitation envelopes that either match with your paper, ribbon or add a new color to the invitation. Choosing bright red envelope with a white invitation can be very dramatic.
You can go online and find many wedding invitation templates, use them.
