Step 1
Make sure your baby is in a good mood. There's no point in trying to snap a photo when your baby's hungry or upset.
-
Step 2
Attach things to the camera that will grab your baby's attention. If you are using a cell phone camera, get a cell phone cover that has highly contrasting colors on it and/or a dangling screen wiper. If you are using a regular camera, let a small trinket dangle from it, like a rear view mirror accessory. These things will get your baby to look toward the camera lens.
-
Step 3
Place the camera in position to snap the photo, but don't hide behind it. Try to maintain eye contact with your baby.
-
Step 4
Hide your baby's favorite toys behind you. When you are ready to take the photo, pull out one of the toys and hold it right above the camera. Be ready to snap the photo when your baby starts to smile. Continue trying it with each toy until you are out of toys.
-
Step 5
Make funny noises that your baby hasn't heard in a while. For example, try clicking your tongue, rolling your tongue, or smacking your lips. Only do it one time and wait for your baby's response. If he/she cries, then don't do it again. If there is no reaction, try it again. Be ready with the camera in case your baby bursts out with a smile.
-
Step 6
Try singing your baby's favorite song. Again, be ready to snap the photo as soon as you see a smile.
-
Step 7
Make silly faces, sticking your tongue out. Always end the face by making eye contact. Babies tend to smile at their parents after they make a silly face.
-
Step 8
Move your hand around and wiggle your fingers. Some babies are delighted to see a hand go from a fist to a peace sign or an open palm to just a thumb.
-
Step 9
Once your baby starts to smile, take many pictures in quick succession. Don't be afraid of taking too many photos. The more photos you take, the more chances you have of getting good smiling baby pictures.
