Microsoft Outlook is one of the most commonly used email applications available for PC users. This article covers setting up an email account in Outlook 2007. Outlook Express has different setup steps, so if you have Outlook Express, search for How to setup Outlook Express. If you have Outlook 2007, continue reading.

Microsoft Outlook 2007 offers an integrated environment for managing time and information. With these instructions for How to Set Up Microsoft Outlook E-mail, you will be able to setup a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) account. POP3 is a standard protocol that provides an easy way for you to access your mailbox on your Internet service provider's (ISP) remote computer and download messages to your computer. These instructions cover setting up a basic POP3 account using information from your ISP, like Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T, etc. Outlook can also be used to setup POP3 access for Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail accounts.

This is a visual quick start guide to setting up an email account in Outlook 2007. The steps are listed below with screen shots for each step to the left of the instructions. Click on the images to zoom in on the image.

Things You'll Need:

  • Email Account information from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • This will include a POP3 server (or incoming sever) informaion
  • You also need the SMTP server (or outgoing server) information
  • Your username and password
  • Your computer with Outlook 2007 previously installed
  1. Step 1

    Open Microsoft Outlook by clicking the icon in the taskbar.

  2. Step 2

    Click on Tools from the Outlook menu bar.

  3. Step 3

    Click on Account Settings from the Tools drop-down menu.

  4. Step 4

    This window will appear. Click on New under the E-mail tab.

  5. Step 5

    A new window will appear with empty text boxes. Do not enter text in these boxes. These instructions are meant to be general purpose, so the Outlook wizard is not followed.

  6. Step 6

    Click the [Manually configure server settings or additional server types] checkbox then click the Next button.

  7. Step 7

    Make sure "Internet E-mail" radio button is selected then click the Next button.

  8. Step 8

    This is the window where you enter the information provided by your ISP or e-mail provider. Enter everything completely and make sure [Remember password] is selected if you do not wish to enter your password every time. If you are setting up this account on a computer that other people use, uncheck this box. Then click the Next button.

  9. Step 9

    You should now see this window, indicating that your account setup is complete. Click the Finish button.

  10. Step 10

    You will return the this window with the e-mail tab highlighted and showing your account below. Click the Close button to finish setup.

  11. Step 11

    Click the Send/Receive button from Outlook's button menu to begin retrieving your e-mail!
