Step 1
You will need a very large pot to make corned beef and cabbage. It is a one pot meal and depending on how much you need to cook, the larger the pot would be. If you do not have a very large pot you can always use separate pots.
-
Step 2
You will need to make the corned beef and cabbage with just three ingredients. You will need potatoes and a head of cabbage you will also need the corned beef.
I use about one and a half potatoes per person eating, this can be adjusted to how much your family eats.
I also use only one head of cabbage because no one eats the cabbage but me. So if your family likes cabbage use more then one, and try to remember the cabbage will shrink down to barley nothing so make sure and use enough cabbage especially if you like it.
I use a thin cut of the corned beef. The corned beef comes in either a thick cut or a thin cut. I just happen to prefer a thin cut of meat. The meat when thin has less fat compared to the thicker cut of meat. So it all depends on your preference. I usually buy about three quarters to a pound of meat per person. The meat will also shrink down in size so that is why I buy so much meat plus I can always have leftovers. -
Step 3
Now that you have all of your ingredients in place you can prepare the corned beef and cabbage. Start off by washing and peeling the potatoes and cut the potatoes in half and place the potatoes in the bottom of the pot.
-
Step 4
Then cut the cabbage in half and remove the hard bitter end of the core off of the cabbage. Then cut the halves in half one more time and wash the cabbage quarters in running water. After the cabbage is washed off, go ahead and place the cabbage in the pot with the potatoes in it.
-
Step 5
You can remove the meat from the package and rinse the meat under running cold water. Then place the meat in the pot with the vegetables.
-
Step 6
The meat and vegetables can be covered now with water. Just fill the pot with water until everything is covered with water.
-
Step 7
Now carefully put the pot on the stove top and bring to a boil. Then reduce the heat down to low and simmer everything together until the meat is tender and falls off of the fork.
-
Step 8
The meat should be removed from the pot carefully then sliced and served with some potatoes also with some of the cabbage. I enjoy dipping everything on my plate in a bit of mustard. This is also very delicious with Irish soda bread.
