Let’s face it, in this economy, everyone is looking to cut costs and save money. If your church is sweating how you are going to pay for your upcoming vacation bible school, don’t fret. Here are some ideas to help you locate reduced-price or even free vacation bible school materials.

Step 1

Go through your church closets and see if you can reuse any of your vacation bible school materials from the previous year. Perhaps your church has built up a coffer of vacation bible school decorations from years past that you could dust off and use again this year.
Step 2

Contact local businesses. In addition to asking local businesses for monetary donations, you should also ask if they have any items like colored paper, cardboard, folders, markers, craft supplies, etc. Many businesses would be more than happy to make a donation to support the local vacation bible school with items they aren’t using anyway.
Step 3

Search on-line for free vacation bible school resources. There are many sites that offer items like bible trading cards that you can print out and use in your bible school lessons. (see resource)
Step 4

Contact your local Christian bookstore to see if they have any outdated vacation bible school workbooks or decorations that they would be willing to sell at a reduced price or donate for your bible school.
Step 5

Ask your church members to help make decorations and clothing for your vacation bible school skits. Many probably even have a cache of items at home that would work nicely for your vacation bible school theme. If no one wants the clothing back, you can save it for the next year, or donate it.
Step 6

Network with other churches to save money on vacation bible school themes. If you get five churches in your network and you each pick a different theme, then you can simply trade each year and you will have five year’s worth of free vacation bible school theme decorations.
