Things You'll Need:
- sewing machine (optional)
- needles
- thread
- fabric
- measuring tape
- foam or pillow stuffing
- straight pins
- scissors
- chalk or pen
- zipper(optional)
-
Step 1
Decide how big you pillow or cushion is going to be. If you are going to use stuffing then it can be any size. If you are using foam then you will need to make sure that the fabric fits the foam or you can cut the foam to fit the fabric. Either way works.
-
Step 2
After checking the measurements on the fabric add a half in to each side of the fabric to allow for a quarter inch seam on all four sides. This means that you will add an inch to the overall size of the fabric.
-
Step 3
Mark your measurements and then cut the fabric to size. It's a lot easier to make sure you are cutting on your marks if you have someone help steady the fabric.
-
Step 4
Putting the right sides of the fabric together, pin together using straight pins. Make sure pins are pointing to the center and the dull side of the fabric is facing you.
-
Step 5
Sew around the edges with a half inch seam allowance. Leave an opening on one side of the pillow large enough to allow you to insert foam or stuffing. To reinforce the seams zig zag stitch over them. (This is especially helpful when sewing smaller seams.)
-
Step 6
Turn your fabric right side out and insert stuffing or foam. Turn edges of opening slightly inward, pin together and make sure that pillow looks how you want it to and that you did not add too much stuffing. If all looks good stitch together. TA DA! You have made your cushion or pillow.
If you would like to make it easier to wash your cushion then add a zipper to where your opening is, this will allow you to take the foam out for easy washing.
