Cellphones are a part of our daily life. Most of us talk for long hours on a cellphone during peak as well as off-peak hours. 1
Check your monthly bills. It is important to follow a planned procedure to reduce your cellphone usage and, subsequently, your bill. If you have chosen to receive online bills, download copies of two to four months of your previous detailed bills. Note down all the areas where you are spending additional money every month that is above and beyond your monthly plan amount. Sometimes you might discover unauthorized or unrecognized charges. You can call your service provider and get a credit for these if they are unauthorized charges. Note the areas where you can reduce your monthly charges.

Select a plan that fits your needs and gives you enough minutes so you won't incur overage charges. Look for plans that allow any extra minutes you have to roll over to the next month. Find plans that give unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling, especially if your friends and family all use the same cellphone provider.

Be aware of how much your cellphone provider charges for text messages. If you don't have unlimited texting, this can be come costly. A chain of conversation through SMS text messages can accumulate charges very quickly if you are paying per message. Instead of texting, especially if you don't know if texting the recipient will incur charges, call the other party using your mobile-to-mobile or off-peak minutes.

4
Ask your cell phone provider if they have discount programs available. Some providers have a premier account that can save you 10 to 12 percent, while being a university student can also knock some money off your bill, in some cases. Check with your employer to see if they have an agreement with a cell phone provider and take advantage of the savings that plan may bring.

5
Monitor your usage regularly. It is a good idea to monitor your cell phone usage at least twice a month through online account management. This will give you a good idea about how many minutes are left on your phone's monthly quota. This way, you can make sure that you do not exceed your monthly minutes limit and save yourself from additional charges for every extra minute.

6
Adjust your cellphone plan if you will be traveling out of the country. If you are traveling out of the United States and you use your phone, you will be charged with international calling rates, which can be quite high. Contact your cellphone provider before traveling and request an international calling account for the time you'll be gone. You'll have to pay a fee, but this is still less expensive than being hit with international calling charges.

If your phone receives multiple telemarketing calls that eat up your minutes, reduce the number of telemarketers that call your number by registering it on the National Do Not Call list. Sales calls are automatically blocked and you reduce the chance of running out of minutes and incurring overage charges.
