It is important to know that most dog ear infection are caused by ear mites. Dog ear mites are tiny white parasites that live in the ear canals of your dog. It should be treated as soon as possible to avoid serious problems in the future or infecting other animals on close contact. If you are suspecting that the dog ear infection is caused by ear mites, it is important to verify it either by yourself first and with your veterinarian if you are not sure.

Step 1

Is your dog constantly itchy and scratching his ears? This is a sign of dog ear infection possibly caused by ear mites. Ear mites live inside the ear canal and they move in there to eat the ear wax to grow and reproduce. So your dog is itchy all the time and his ear is infected constantly.
Step 2

Redness is a sign of inflammation and infection. Those ear mites can easily cause an infection because they move and eat ear wax and that irritates the ear canal.
Step 3

Look at the inside of a dog’s ear. Does it discharge a black / brown coffee ground material? If it does, look at those discharges carefully and try to identify white dots from it. Because ear mites are very small, it is very hard to see with naked eyes. However, most adult ear mites appear as little white dots.
Step 4

If you are still not sure whether your dog has ear mites, it is important to go to the veterinarian for an examination to conclusively determine if your dog is infected or not.
Step 5

Dog ear infection caused by ear mites should be treated early to alleviate your beloved pet from discomfort. If you don't seek treatments, ear mites are highly contagious among cats and dogs. Your dog will pass on his ear mites to other dogs and cause them problems as well.

on 3/13/2009 Rabbits took to nesting in our yard last spring and my border collie picked up ear mites from the abandoned nest...it spread to all of my fur-kids. All fur-kids needed to be treated. Helpful article for all cat and dog owners.
