How to obtain a passport for a baby born abroad in Mexico

If you plan on having your child born abroad, it is important to know what you will need for his/her American passport. This documents are for Mexico only.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    The first step after your child is born is to get their Mexican Birth Certificate. This is not given to you as you leave the hospital, it is something that must applied for. For this you will need"
    (1) Both parents original birth certificates with apostile.
    (2) FM-2 or FM-3 for each of you.
    (3) Passports for each of you
    (4) An electrical, gas or phone bill showing your name and address.
    (5) 2 witnesses at the time you go
    (6) Vaccination card, ask your pediatrician how you can obtain this
    (7) Marriage license with apostile from state of marriage.

  2. Step 2

    In order to get an American passport for your child you will need to get the Mexican Birth Certificate first.
    (1) Mexican Birth Certificate
    (2) Proof of both parent's identity - U.S. Driver's License
    (3) Pre-Natal Documents of Mother - Ultrasounds, prescriptions, evidence of Dr. visits, photos showing mother pregnant - the more of these items the better.
    (4) Documents from Hospital - Hospital certificate, identification bracelet, hospital photos, vaccination card.
    (5) Proof of parent's presence in Mexico - FM-2, FM-3
    (6) small passport size photo of your child taken by a passport photographer

  3. Step 3

    Once you have ALL of these documents together and nothing is incomplete, you will take all documents along with a passport application for your child to the U.S. embassy. Make an appointment with the consulate to give him all of the information. They will then send it off for approval and contact you once your childs passport is ready to be picked up at their office. It usually takes about 2 months.
