How to Have a Child With Dual Citizenship

Gather all documents BEFORE your child is born. Many items take months to receive through the
mail, so start getting everything ready to go so that you will have it once your child is born. Believe me the last thing you want to do is trying to get paperwork together when you have a newborn. I had my child born in Mexico and this is what I had to gather to apply for dual citizenship of a baby born abroad. -

To obtain a Mexican Birth Certificate you will need the following, they will not just hand you a birth certificate when you leave the hospital you have to apply for it.
(1) Both parents original birth certificates with apostile.
(2) FM-2 or FM-3
(3) Passports
(4) An electrical, gas or phone bill showing your name and address.
(5) 2 witnesses at the time you go
(6) Vaccination card
(7) Marriage license with apostile from state of marriage. -

To get your childs passport you will need to have:
(1) Mexican Birth Certificate - See above
(2) Proof of both parent's identity - U.S. Driver's License
(3) Pre-Natal Documents of Mother - Ultrasounds, prescriptions, evidence of Dr. visits, photos showing mother pregnant - the more of these items the better.
(4) Documents from Hospital - Hospital certificate, identification bracelet, hospital photos, vaccination card.
(5) Proof of parent's presence in Mexico - FM-2, FM-3

Tips & Warnings
Gather documents in advance
Can take awhile to obtain, so if you have to get back into the States with your child, plan for about a 2 month delay before you get their passport
