Talking to your doctor isn't always easy, and it is important to be prepared and do your own research before your appointment. Learn some of the best ways to communicate with your doctor and get the most out of your visit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • internet or library access for research
  • health journal- yours!
  • write down what you want to talk about, in priorities
  1. Step 1

Right or wrong, the fact is that doctors see a whole lot of patients, and sometimes they simply don't have time to listen to their patients. Come prepared and you'll get better attention from your doctor. Make a list of your concerns, with the most pressing issues to be mentioned first. Make a list of your health habits, what you are taking- over-the-counter medications, prescriptions, herbal and alternative remedies, and physical therapy and activity. Note your family history, and any relevant health history of your own.

  2. Step 2

Take notes before-hand and during the appointment so you don't forget an important topic.

  3. Step 3

Ask the doctor to clarify any overly technical language they use, or any instructions that you don't understand.

  4. Step 4

Talk about past doctors- what did you like about them, what you didn't like about them and what you wish they'd have done. This gives your doctor an idea of what to prioritize with you.

  5. Step 5

Be detailed when you explaining symptoms- don't just say you have pain in your back. Tell them how bad the pain is, where it is, if it is constant or if not, when it strikes. Tell them the type of pain and intensity, and the time of days you get it, or what activities seem to trigger it.

  6. Step 6

If you are going to have tests run, ask the doctor what the procedure will be like, what you can expect as far as time-commitment, and any recommendations you have. Always ask if you don't understand anything, and if you are out of time, reschedule so you can have all your questions and issues taken care of. Coming prepared will help you and your doctor, and ultimately benefit you- the more they understand about you, the better suited the doctor is to work with you!! And always remember that if you give respect, you should also get it, so if you aren't treated well, find a doctor who will!
