Step 1
Ask your doctor if he can write a prescription for a higher dosage medication so you can cut the pills in half. Some medications can be halved without losing its effectiveness. A bottle of 40 mg pills will cost less than two bottles of 20 mg pills. If your doctor agrees, purchase an inexpensive pill cutter. You can find these at any drug store.
-
Step 2
Check the drug manufacturers website to see if there are any coupons. A lot of manufacturers have discounts and assistance for people who are without insurance or are having a hard time financially.
-
Step 3
By your medications in bulk. If you have to take medications for chronic conditions you can buy them in bulk. The medications may cost more upfront, but it is cheaper than buying a supply every month. Ask your doctor of pharmacist for information.
-
Step 4
By generic medications if at all possible. Generic medications provide the same effects as the original medications. Generic drugs are a lot cheaper than the original medications.
-
Step 5
Try not to use insurance for low cost drugs. You may have to pay perhaps $10.00 for a $5.00 medication. Ask the pharmacist for the cost of the medication before deciding to use your insurance.
-
Step 6
Don't use free samples from the doctors office. If you have to take a medication for a long period of time, these drugs may be more expensive. Ask for a cheaper brand.
-
Step 7
Check discount stores such as Walmart. Some of these stores now only charge $4.00 for a 30 day supply and $10.00 for a 90 day supply of generic drugs. Check with the store to see if your medications qualify.
