Instructions

Evaluate your space. The most requested game is pool, but a lot of times people don't have room to accommodate a pool table properly. Keep in mind that pool tables come in several lengths. A 7-foot table is usually the best choice for a smaller space. You'll want to have a minimum of 4 feet around each side, preferably 5 to 6 for better range of motion.

Ping-pong and air hockey are two examples of games that require less space, but are just as fun as pool. Foosball is also a great game room table that comes in many styles from the modern to the more traditional. There is also a variety of other fun alternatives such as darts and less space-consuming table games like chess and backgammon.

    • 3

Pick out furniture that's comfortable, but also consider the function of the pieces. A wipeable material such as leather is always a good choice when there is food and drink around. Swivel chairs are also a nice option, so that guests can easily join in any game or conversation.

    • 4

When it comes to game rooms, most people opt for darker-colored walls to make it feel cozy and more like a pool hall or pub. I suggest keeping a two-color palette consistent throughout.

    • 5

Skip the cliche "dogs playing poker" artwork and opt for more interesting posters and memorabilia. An autograph collection or other type of sports memorabilia display will give it a nice game room touch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that if you have guests, they may want to watch TV or movies, as well as have an area for socializing. Tall, bar-type tables are perfect for corners and don't take up much space. Plus, the higher vantage point on a barstool is nice for watching pool or any other table game.
