Dog at Heel
Dog at Heel

Walking comfortably with your dog on a loose leash requires some training. Teaching your dog to heel can be very helpful.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Long lead
  • handful of small training treats
  1. Step 1

To train a dog to heel, first take him to a large open area and put a long lead on. A lead is simply a leash of one length or another. The longer the lead, the better for this training.

  2. Step 2

Begin walking in any direction, without saying anything to the dog. At some point, the dog should start to come to you. When his nose gets close, say "heel" and show a treat in your left hand for the dog to sniff.

  3. Step 3

Require the dog to walk several steps at heel before rewarding with the treat. As soon as the dog breaks heel, turn and walk in a different direction and repeat the same process.

  4. Step 4

With practice, the dog should begin to get the idea that "heel" is walking next to you, and when he does so, he gets a reward. Walking your dog daily will help to reinforce this training.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to not be tense or frustrated during this training, you are rewarding positive behavior, not punishing negative behavior.
  • Be sure to keep an eye out for other dogs, cars, people and other distractions. If your dog decides to break and run for it, you need to have a quick hand on the lead and be prepared to pull the dog back in if necessary.
