How to Make a Denim Skirt Out of Jeans

Are the legs of your jeans too worn to even be fashionable? Why not turn those old faded blues into a fashionable new denim skirt?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Denim Jeans
    Denim Jeans

    Take a pair of old denim jeans and cut them 12" down from the crotch on each leg.

  2. Step 2
    Seam Ripper
    Seam Ripper

    Turn jeans inside out. Use a seam ripper and tear out inside seam of legs and crotch area of pants.

  3. Step 3

    Take a piece of pant leg. Cut square from leg big enough to fill in the "V" gap between the legs of the denim. Pin leg piece in place with both right sides facing you and the pant leg piece behind your main piece of denim as indicated by the following diagram.

  4. Step 4

    With right side of denim facing you, stitch wedge in place on the front side and back side of skirt - separately.

  5. Step 5

    Turn up 1/2 - 1 inch of fabric towards the inside of the skirt and hem around the bottom.

Tips & Warnings
  • Insert different kinds of fabric in wedge of skirt to give a unique design.
  • Use rhinestones, stitches, ribbon, buttons, fabric paint, and other accessories to decorate your skirt.
  • When sewing fabric wedges in skirt, be careful to keep front and back panels of skirt seperated to prevent stitching them back together as you would a pair of pants.
  • Article assumes you have the basic knowledge of sewing tools, such as a seam ripper and sewing machine.
  • Use caution when using machinery such as a sewing machine.
  • Make sure your sewing machine is able to handle the heavy fabric of denim before attempting project.
