There's nothing like homebaked cookies. They're fresh, you know what's in them, where they came from, and there's a little bit of love baked within each crumb. So, why not bake something special for your four-legged friend as well? Here we'll learn about making all-natural dog biscuits to add a little extra wag into Fido's tail.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cookie pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Bone-shaped cookie cutter
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup free-range chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, honey, or real maple syrup
  • 3 cups whole wheat pastry flour (I like Red Mill)
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 325F and line your cookie pan with parchment paper. You can also grease your cookie pan if you don't have any parchment paper on hand. You may also want to flour a surface in your kitchen to get ready for kneading later.

  2. Step 2

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let sit for 5 minutes. Then, whisk in the egg. Pour in your chicken broth and two tablespoons of all-natural sweetner. Mix well.

  3. Step 3

With a large wooden spoon, mix in the flour and wheatgerm.

  4. Step 4

Form dough into a ball and place upon a floured surface. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Then use a rolling pin to roll the dough out a little less than half an inch thick. Use your bone cookie-cutter to cut out little bones. If you don't have a bone cookie-cutter, any other shape will do (e.g. a cat cookie-cutter!).

  5. Step 5

Place dog treats on your cookie pan and bake for 40-50minutes, until slightly firm (but not rock hard). Let cool, and then hand some to good ol' Fido.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add some parmesan cheese to your dough before baking for a cheesy treat.
  • You can make this vegetarian by using vegetable stock in place of chicken stock.
  • Store in an airtight container to prolong freshness. Can also be stored in the fridge...even frozen!
  • Don't give your dog a treat straight from the oven! Wait for them to cool down since they could be too hot!
