framing and studding

My father had no sons, so I, his only daughter, helped him as he built our house. I learned how to put up studs and make a wooden wall. I will share this knowledge with you in easy steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • hammer
  • nails
  • level
  • rule
  • 2 x 4s
  • pine boards
  • decorative plywood panels
  1. Step 1

To being you need to measure off the area where you are going to put your wall. Then you begin laying the 2x4 on the floor the length of your wall. They are to support the studs that you will attach to them

  2. Step 2

Nailing a 2x4 on the ceiling directly above the one you placed on the floorm you are creating the top of your frame for placing your studs.
One you have the top and the bottom in place, you will begin nailing the upright studs between the floor and the ceiling 2x4s. You should place the studs about 18 inches apart. If you are handy with a hammer and nails, this work should go quickly.

  3. Step 3

The next step is to take your pine lumber that is tongue and grooved and nail the first one across the studs at floor length. Then add the next board to the one you just installed. Keep building on each board until you reach the ceiling. You will have a wood wall when you reach the ceiling. You can nail boards on the other side of your wall to finiah it.

  4. Step 4

Now yOu have a rough pine wall. Next take the sheets of decorative wood plywood panels and nail them over the pine boards to make an attractive wall in your room.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are different grades of decorative plywood. The better grades are heavier and are thicker and are worth the additional cost.
