Step 1
First, you have to sit down and decide what you need and what you want. "Needs" might include a car seat (since they won't let you leave the hospital without one) and a crib. "Wants" might be a baby swing or a changing table.
-
Step 2
Hit the second-hand stores and yard sales. Shopping at second-hand stores and yard sales doesn't mean buying used stuff. You can usually find baby clothes and gear in new condition with tags. This can save you a bunch of money in the long run since kids quickly outgrow their clothes.
-
Step 3
Get creative and use substitutes when you can. Example: You don't have to buy a baby bag to haul around your baby's diapers and bottles. You can use any bag and just buy a small pouch that holds diapers and wipes. Most affordable baby bags are cheaply made and the nice ones are very expensive. Tote bags and large purses work very well as baby bags. Plus, you can change them to match your outfit whenever you want!
-
Step 4
Sign up for freebies. If you plan on formula-feeding, you can get free cans of formula and lots of money-saving coupons from baby formula websites. You can also get free samples and coupons for diapers and baby wipes.
-
Step 5
Check out Ebay and Craigslist every once in a while for some great deals on all your baby wants and needs, especially if you're looking for something specific.
-
Step 6
Shop online. You can usually find baby gear for less online, often with free shipping. You can also find coupon codes exclusively for online shopping through sites such as Retail Me Not (link included at the end of this article) and save even more money.
-
Step 7
Make a gift registry. People will give you gifts anyway, you might as well get what you need.
