      Pie shaped section

The first mistake most people make when cutting bangs is they do too much or too little. Here's how you know how to measure them. Part the hair in the middle. Now pull back your hair on the sides a little, see that little place that kind of moves back from your temple? That's your natural hairline. What you're going to do use the back edge of your comb as a straight edge. Set one end right on that recession point. Now bring the other end up and let it intersect with your part. When you've done this on both sides, that triangle or pie shape is what should be banks. Don't cut yet!

      Oops!

Decide what kind of bangs you want. You can have them sweep to the side so they're longer on one side. You can do them straight across, or even do a Betty Paige style of bang. How long do you want them? Remember that when they're dry, they'll bounce up a bit so always cut a little longer than you think you'll need. Unless you're going for a really trendy look, your bangs should never be shorter than just over your eyebrows.

Pull the rest of your hair back and secure it. If it's not long enough for a pony tail, then at least clip it so it's not in the way.

Spray your bangs or just get them wet with a wet comb. Let's pretend you just want the straight across the forehead style. Start in the center. Cut a small section. Now using that as your guide, cut from the center out to each edge. Be careful not to cut into the hairline

Are you done? Nope! Unless you're in third grade, you need to do a bit more. Comb the entire section of bangs straight up in the air (at a 90 degree angle from your head). Cut the ends just a bit shorter. When you let them down, this will have layered them ever so slightly so they don't sit blunt across your forehead.

Now you can do it yourself!

Tips & Warnings

  • Comb more than you cut, each time comb it down straight so you're sure to get a good line.

  • If you're doing a child's hair tell them to hold their breathe while you cut, then blow on their face to get off the pieces.

  • If you cut a piece too short, DO NOT cut everything to match, just blend it in a bit and within a few weeks it'll be grown out.
