Step 1
Start with what you have. Separate all minifigs form other legos. Also, separate all accessories like hats, tools, weapons, and loose body parts like hands, legs, torsos and heads.
-
Step 2
Organization is key. Purchase plastic trays with dividers to separate minifigs and parts. Organize minifigs by theme and size. Focus on collecting only a few themes, maybe sentimental ones that you played with as a kid. Go back and complete the themes finding missing people and accessories. ( Use web link below to find all lego people released by theme.) With nearly 4,000 unique minifigure designs it's impossible to collect all the lego people ever made but you can collect your favorites. See link below.

Step 3
Find pieces online. Ebay and other online sources are great for finding minifig pieces you need. I always sell my unwanted lego people and pieces on ebay. When I am in the market for lego minifigs I purchase large lego lots of people. The larger the lot the cheaper it will be person by person. When I am in the market for star war lego minifigs I will buy a large bulk lot that includes star war legos, harry potter legos, batman legos and other themes. I will then save the ones I want and sell the rest in small lots by theme. This strategy will save you money on the legos you want and make profit on the ones you don't.
